Empowering Students, One Pair of Shoes at a Time
Addressing a Critical Need
The United Way of Eastern Utah recognizes that the burden of back-to-school costs can be a significant challenge for many families in their service area, which encompasses Carbon, Emery, San Juan, Grand, Uintah, Duchesne, and Daggett counties. When students arrive at school in worn-out or ill-fitting shoes, their attention is often diverted from their studies, as they struggle with discomfort and self-consciousness. The Soles2Souls program aims to alleviate this problem, ensuring that children can focus on their education without the distraction of inadequate footwear.A Collaborative Effort
The success of the Soles2Souls program is a testament to the power of community partnerships. The United Way of Eastern Utah has secured funding from workplace donations, as well as grants from organizations like the San Juan Clean Energy Foundation, to cover the nearly ,000 cost of the initiative. Additionally, volunteers from Accension St. Matthews Church have lent their time and effort, handing out gently used coats to 68 children at the Price event.Bringing Joy and Confidence
For the United Way of Eastern Utah, the Soles2Souls program is more than just a practical solution – it's a chance to bring joy and confidence to the children they serve. Executive Director Pam Boyd describes the experience of handing a child a brand-new pair of shoes as a "great feeling," as they witness the excitement and gratitude in the recipients' eyes. This simple act can have a profound impact, empowering students to approach the school year with a renewed sense of self-assurance and readiness to learn.Ongoing Support and Future Plans
The United Way of Eastern Utah's commitment to supporting local students extends beyond the annual Soles2Souls events. Additionally, the team is already planning for the 2025 Soles2Souls events, which will return to Price in August and Blanding in September, ensuring that the program's impact continues to grow.As the new school year begins, the United Way of Eastern Utah's Soles2Souls initiative stands as a shining example of how a community can come together to uplift and empower its young people.
