Mustaches for Kids: A National Movement with Local Impact
Mustaches for Kids is a national organization that has been harnessing the power of facial hair to benefit children's nonprofits for over two decades. The Wilmington chapter, one of the first in the nation, has been making waves in Southeastern North Carolina, focusing its efforts on supporting organizations that serve the needs of children in New Hanover, Brunswick, and Pender counties. The Wilmington chapter of Mustaches for Kids has been in operation for an impressive 21 years, starting in 2003 with just a handful of dedicated individuals. Today, the chapter boasts a membership of over 100 passionate supporters, all united in their mission to make a tangible difference in the lives of local children.
Fundraising with a Twist: The Mustache-Growing Challenge
The chapter's primary fundraising initiative is a unique event that takes place every November. Starting on the first of the month, all the "growers" in the group must be clean-shaven, kicking off a month-long challenge to grow the most impressive mustache. Throughout the month, the chapter members meet weekly to check in on their progress, take photos, and turn in any pledge funds they have collected during the week. The culmination of this mustache-growing endeavor is the "Stache Bash" gala, a mustache-themed costume event where the chapter reveals the final funds that have been raised. This celebration not only showcases the impressive facial hair of the participants but also serves as a platform to announce the total amount raised for the local children's nonprofits.
Community Engagement and Partnerships
The Wilmington chapter of Mustaches for Kids has forged strong partnerships within the local community to amplify their fundraising efforts. One such partnership is with the Wilmington Brewing Company, which has brewed a special beer exclusively for the chapter's events. A portion of the sales from this beer goes directly to the Mustaches for Kids initiative, further bolstering their financial support for the local nonprofits. The chapter also invites the public to participate in their events, such as the upcoming "Shave Day" on November 6th. This event, held at the Wilmington Brewing Company, provides an opportunity for anyone interested in joining the cause to come out, get clean-shaven, and start their own mustache-growing journey.
